Nestled within the renowned Water Valley in South Australia, our guided hunts offer an unparalleled opportunity to experience the thrill of the chase amidst breathtaking landscapes, all within 116,000 acre’s of premium hunting territory.
Led by expert hunter Bill Teffaha, each excursion promises an immersive and educational journey as you track down your desired prey. With over 20,000 deer spanning species such as Fallow, Red, Sambar, Rusa, and Chital, the reserve boasts some of the largest trophies in the country, ensuring an unforgettable hunting experience.
This particular hunt has a focus on getting you either a Fallow buck, or meat animal (doe). The fallow deer (Dama dama) is a medium to large-sized deer species native to Europe, though it has been introduced to various parts of the world for hunting and ornamental purposes. It’s known for its striking coat coloration and distinctive antlers.
Physically, fallow deer exhibit considerable variation in coat coloration, ranging from light tan to dark brown, with white spots scattered across their back and sides. This unique spotted coat sets them apart from other deer species. They also have a characteristic black stripe running along the length of their tail, which ends in a small tuft of black hair. Both males, known as bucks, and females, known as does, possess antlers, though those of males are typically larger and more elaborately branched.
Adult male fallow deer can weigh between 60 to 150 kilograms (130 to 330 pounds), while females are generally smaller, weighing around 30 to 60 kilograms (66 to 132 pounds). They have a sleek and agile build, with slender legs and a relatively long neck.
Fallow deer are primarily herbivores, feeding on a variety of vegetation including grasses, leaves, shoots, and fruits. They are crepuscular animals, meaning they are most active during dawn and dusk, though they may be active at other times depending on factors like habitat and predation pressure.
During the breeding season, known as the rut, male fallow deer compete for dominance and mating rights by engaging in displays of strength and vocalizations. The rutting season typically occurs in the fall, during which time the distinctive calls of rutting bucks can be heard echoing through the forests. Fallow deer are social animals, often forming mixed-sex herds led by a dominant male.
