This particular hunt has a focus on getting you either a Red stag, or meat animal (hind).
The red deer, scientifically known as Cervus elaphus, is one of the largest deer species in the world and is native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa. It’s renowned for its majestic appearance and impressive antlers.
Physically, red deer have a reddish-brown coat, which may vary slightly depending on the season and subspecies. They have a white rump patch that becomes more prominent during the winter months. Male red deer, known as stags, are notably larger and heavier than females, known as hinds. Stags possess impressive antlers, which they shed and regrow annually. These antlers can span up to 1.2 meters (4 feet) in width and weigh as much as 15 kilograms (33 pounds). Females typically do not have antlers, though exceptions exist in certain populations.
Adult male red deer can weigh anywhere from 160 to 240 kilograms (350 to 530 pounds), while females typically weigh between 120 to 170 kilograms (260 to 370 pounds). They have a robust build with strong, muscular legs, enabling them to traverse varied terrain with ease.
Red deer are primarily herbivores, feeding on grasses, leaves, shoots, and various plants. They are crepuscular animals, meaning they are most active during dawn and dusk, though they may be active at other times depending on factors like habitat and weather conditions.
During the breeding season, known as the rut, male red deer engage in fierce battles for dominance and mating rights. The deep bellowing calls of stags echo through the forests as they vie for the attention of receptive females. Red deer are known for their complex social structures, with hinds forming groups led by a dominant male.
