Nestled within the renowned Water Valley in South Australia, our guided hunts offer an unparalleled opportunity to experience the thrill of the chase amidst breathtaking landscapes, all within 116,000 acre’s of premium hunting territory.
Led by expert hunter Bill Teffaha, each excursion promises an immersive and educational journey as you track down your desired prey. With over 20,000 deer spanning species such as Fallow, Red, Sambar, Rusa, and Chital, the reserve boasts some of the largest trophies in the country, ensuring an unforgettable hunting experience.
This particular hunt has a focus on getting you either a Sambar stag, or meat animal (hind).
The Sambar deer is a large and majestic species native to the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and parts of East Asia. It’s one of the largest deer species in the world. Sambar deer exhibit sexual dimorphism, with males being significantly larger and heavier than females.
In terms of appearance, Sambar deer have a dark brown coat that can vary in shade depending on the region. They typically have a shaggy mane around their neck and a short tail. One of their most distinctive features is their large, branching antlers, which are primarily present in males and can grow up to 110 centimeters (43 inches) in length.
Adult male Sambar deer can weigh anywhere from 200 to 320 kilograms (440 to 705 pounds), while females generally weigh between 100 to 160 kilograms (220 to 350 pounds). They have a robust build with strong legs, enabling them to navigate through dense forests and rough terrain with ease.
Sambar deer are predominantly herbivores, feeding on a variety of vegetation including grasses, leaves, fruits, and shrubs. They are primarily crepuscular, meaning they are most active during dawn and dusk, although they can be active at any time of day depending on factors like habitat and predation pressure. Sambar deer are solitary animals or may form small groups, and they are known to be wary and elusive, often retreating into dense vegetation when threatened.
