Water Buffalo Hunting Australia
So back between 1825 and 1843 80 Water buffalo were brought over into Australia to Melville Island and the Coburg Peninsula. Now we have as many as 150,000 Buffalo roaming the northern 3rd of North Territory.
If you are looking to hunt ‘big game’ in Australia the Water Buffalo is your best bet. The Buffalo can weigh up to 1200 kilograms making them the biggest game animal in Australia. You will exclusively find all of the hunting of Water Buffalo occurs in the North Territory, most of it being done on Arnhem Land.
Australia has two types of buffalo: the river type from western Asia, with curled horns, and the swamp type from eastern Asia, with swept-back horns. Both of these Buffalo species can be hunted for recreation.
During most of the dry season (May–October), males (bulls) and females (cows) live separately. Females and calves, led by one of the older females, occupy the forested plains where food and shade are most plentiful. Males live in more open plains with little shade, or slopes with dryer vegetation.
When the wet season breaks, the older males join the females and drive away younger males. There is a peak of mating in about March and pregnancy lasts about ten months.
Below you will find a great video highlighting how amazing these animals are.
