**NSW genuine reason UPDATE**
A week and a half ago we communicated via email to all members that the Hunters and Shooters Society of Australia (HSSA) plan to de-commission their company by 30th June 2024, and will no longer be accepting new members as of 30th June 2023.
This is important because it is through our relationship with the HSSA that we are able to offer Genuine Reason status to NSW, VIC and QLD members.
Now I’m excited to announce that our club’s pending AHO application with the NSW DPI, (which allows us to offer genuine reason to NSW firearm owners) has been approved! This means that any eligible Australian Hunters Club member who had previously had their genuine reason with HSSA can now move this over to our club and avoid the disruption in 12 months time. Instructions on how to do this will be sent via email to all eligible NSW members in the next week.
If you did not receive our initial email about the closure of the HSSA you can read a copy of it below.
If after reading this post you still have questions about what this means for you please contact us via the form on our website here https://australianhunters.com.au/contact.

Hello everyone,
I have an important update regarding the future of your insurance coverage and genuine reason status.
On Friday, May 2nd, the Hunters and Shooters Society of Australia (HSSA) informed the Australian Hunters Club that they plan to de-commission their company by 30 June 2024, and will no longer be accepting new members as of 30 June 2023.
This information is important to you because your current insurance cover and genuine reason are provided through the HSSA, as part of your dual membership. While your membership with The Australian Hunters Club is fine and won’t change, this is not the case with your HSSA membership.
The HSSA has assured us that they will maintain their current licenses and genuine reason with active Australian Hunters Club members until the end of their 12-month agreement period. This means that you will have an active genuine reason stat and be covered by the HSSA insurance policy until 05/24/2024. After this date, your genuine reason status and insurance coverage with the HSSA will cease.
Please note that if your HSSA 12-month renewal date is approaching soon and you rely on it for your genuine reason, it is important that you find another source for your genuine reason as this is a requirement for maintaining an active firearm license. If this is the case I want to apologies for the inconvenience this has caused you. The news of HSSA’s closure came as a surprise to us and even though we have sought to communicate this news as quickly as possible, for some members this news will mean you need to act quickly. If this is the case for you I want to personally apologise.
At the time of writing this email, The Australian Hunters Club has a pending AHO application with the NSW DPI. Once approved, we will be able to provide genuine reasons for all NSW members with an active R-License. We hope to share more news regarding the outcome of this application and the pathway and timeline for transferring NSW members genuine reason to our club soon.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to Phillip Kolera, the president of the HSSA, for his support of our club over the past 18 months. The assistance we have received from The Hunters and Shooters Society of Australia has been instrumental in our growth and prosperity, and for that, we are truly thankful.
If you have any questions regarding the closure of the HSSA, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Kind regards,
Chris Waters
